Dogs are celebrated as more than pets; they are loyal companions and cherished family members. A dog expert has revealed how popular dog breeds fare in terms of intelligence.

For many people, dogs are more than just pets; they are loyal companions and confidants whose playful antics can brighten even the dullest days, while their protective nature offers a sense of security. However, not all dogs are the same when it comes to their roles as pets. Each breed has its own distinct character, and some are particularly well-suited to specific lifestyles or needs.

Factors like temperament, size, energy level, and intelligence often influence how well a dog fits into a home or family. According to Axel Lagercrantz, dog expert and CEO of the UK’s largest pet rehoming site, Pets4Homes, intelligence “isn’t purely a matter of chance.” He told Express.co.uk, “Different dogs have different levels of intelligence—it’s similar to how humans vary. Some dogs excel at playing catch, while others may not grasp that they need to bring the ball back to continue the game.”

Axel explained that a dog’s intelligence is assessed based on several factors, including how quickly they learn new commands.

He said, “A dog should understand a command in fewer than five repetitions.” Another key indicator of intelligence is how well a dog responds to commands on the first try. “To be ranked among the top, a dog should obey a recognized command correctly at least 95% of the time,” added the Pets4Homes CEO.

Border Collie

Ranked as the smartest dog in psychologist Stanley Coren’s The Intelligence of Dogs, Border Collies are globally recognized for their intelligence. Axel concurred, stating, “Border Collies clearly understand what their trainer or owner is asking them to do.”

These stunning dogs, often sporting two-tone coats, were originally bred for herding sheep. They excel at this task due to their strength, stamina, intelligence, and strong work ethic.

Border Collies are well-known for using “the eye”—a focused, intense stare to intimidate members of the flock. When it comes to intelligence, most Border Collies can learn a new command in fewer than five repetitions and follow it correctly at least 95% of the time.

Poodle

Axel explained, “Poodles were originally bred as water retrievers for hunters in Germany and are also incredibly intelligent.”

Today, Poodles are popular in mixed breeds, with cockapoos being some of the trendiest pets. However, breeders appreciate purebred Poodles for more than just their hypoallergenic coats. In Stanley Coren’s renowned book, the iconic curly-coated dogs were ranked second for their intelligence.

German Shepherd

German Shepherds are commonly used in police and military roles, as well as medical assistance and therapy, making it no surprise that they are considered one of the smartest breeds.

Known for their loyalty and dedication, these dark-coated companions are always eager to learn. Also referred to as the Alsatian dog or GSD, the German Shepherd was originally bred for herding sheep and is renowned for its intelligence.

Generally large, yet agile and muscular, this breed thrives in active households as they require plenty of daily exercise. With instincts honed over centuries of protecting flocks, German Shepherds are naturally protective and alert.

Golden Retrievers

Axel noted, “Golden Retrievers, often used as guide dogs, are incredibly intelligent.” These friendly dogs are among the most cherished family pets in the country and also ranked highly in Stanley Coren’s intelligence survey.

Originally bred as hunting dogs, Golden Retrievers also have a playful and, many would say, goofy side, making them excellent companions.

Typical retriever traits include being quick learners, eager to please, and excelling at problem-solving tasks such as opening doors or locating hidden objects.

Basset Hounds

Basset Hounds, originally bred as hunting dogs, are fairly intelligent, though they can be stubborn and independent. Positive reinforcement, particularly treats, can make training easier, and their friendly, gentle nature makes them great family pets.

According to Basset Hound Rescue, using positive motivation, especially treats, will reveal just how smart these dogs really are.

Bassets were bred to work well in packs with other dogs and typically get along with their canine companions. However, they also form strong bonds with their human families and are known for being affectionate, showing none of the aloofness seen in some other hound breeds.
