Dog lovers, we have reason to rejoice!
Earlier this year, plans were submitted to the Coffs Harbour City Council for a 30-dog breeding facility in Moonee Beach. More than 11, 800 PETA supporters objected, and now, the applicant has withdrawn their proposal.
There’s no question about it: puppy farms contribute to the homeless-animal crisis. Every puppy bred and sold by such facilities takes away a chance at a loving home for a dog in a shelter. Approximately 200,000 dogs enter Australia’s shelters and pounds every year, and around 44,000 of them are euthanised. There are – and will continue to be – far more dogs needing homes than there are homes for them – so breeding more isn’t just irresponsible, it’s deadly.
A staggering number of development applications for puppy farms are popping up in NSW as breeders move across the border from Victoria, where breeding laws have tightened. An estimated 200 puppy farms are already in operation across New South Wales.
Breeders are also keen to cash in on the “pandemic puppy” market, pumping out litter after litter of “designer” dogs with genetic disorders and behavioural problems.
We will continue to object to these proposed developments as soon as we hear about them.
It’s now more important than ever to stay away from pet stores and breeders – no matter how reputable they may seem – and only ever adopt from a rescue group or shelter.
