A doting Australian pet-owner has created an incredible outdoor enclosure for her two pet cats using DIY buys from Bunnings.

The mum, from Victoria, shared photos of her large ‘catio’ to Facebook and revealed the project cost her approximately $2,000.

‘Someone asked about building a ‘catio’ [and] this is our version. Everything was purchased from Bunnings,’ she wrote on the Bunnings Mum Australia Facebook page.

She revealed her husband built the 5 metre x 2.5 metre enclosure after watching a YouTube tutorial and said it’s ‘not a cheap project’.

‘You don’t have to build it as big as this but we wanted to be able to sit in there with them and needed it to be sturdy as we had an actual tornado here a few years ago,’ she said.

She said her husband used aviary mesh and outdoor staples to construct the walls and placed artificial grass on the ground.

He also built a litter box that can be emptied by pulling out a draw and she said ‘this is an important design element as I have a bad back and can’t bend down easily’.

‘It cost at least $2000 as you have to use materials suitable for outdoor use but if you used recycled materials instead of new that would bring the cost down,’ she said.

She explained that the cats can access the catio via a cat door from a window of her home.

Their efforts have been met with an outpouring of praise on Facebook, with other users saying the design is ‘fantastic’.

‘That’s fantastic! I love that there’s so much space for them,’ one person commented.

Another wrote: ‘What an absolutely brilliant job your husband has done! Super happy cats I bet!’

‘Absolutely amazing! I want one for my fur babies,’ one person said. ‘Oh man I need this for my two crazy kitty cats,’ another agreed.
