A ‘demonic’ cat who was returned to the RSPCA four times over his bad behaviour has found a new owner in time for Christmas.

Eight-year-old tabby Chester lasted just three months with his previous owner before he was returned to RSPCA  South Australia’s shelter in Lonsdale, south of Adelaide, in mid-November.

A cat-lover named Wilma, who wished to withhold her surname, finally adopted Chester on Wednesday, just two sleeps before Christmas.

Wilma has owned cats in the past and made the decision to adopt Chester after seeing his story on the news on Tuesday night.

‘I’ve been wanting another cat for a while and I just thought he looked cute,’ Wilma said.

‘There’s just me, no other animals, and I’m retired so I’m home a lot.

‘He’s been following me around the house and he sat up behind my head on the recliner.

‘It’s only day one, but he’s already looking pretty relaxed here and I’m just letting him mosey about and giving him a treat now and then.’

Although this will be Chester’s fifth home in seven years, RSPCA cat carer Jenny Sherring feels confident that Chester has found his perfect match in Wilma.

‘As soon as Wilma interacted with him, it was clear that this was a lady who understands cats,’ Ms Sherring said.

Ms Sherring is delighted for Chester but admits they will all miss the cat, who she describes as a ‘unique character’.

‘Because he’s been in and out of our care so many times now, all of us in the cat-care team have gotten to know him and appreciate his quirky, confident nature,’ she said.

‘I’ll definitely miss having him call out to me each day, wanting me to step into his enclosure with him and give him some love and attention.

‘With Wilma, I feel confident that he’s going to get all the attention he wants – and no more. That’s a perfect outcome.’

RSPCA SA posted a callout to find Chester a new owner to Facebook on Tuesday.

‘We’re not going to beat around the bush with this one, Chester has some serious cattitude,’ RSPCA SA wrote.

‘Despite his (ahem) misgivings, Chester has a unique and quirky personality. When you strip back his cold, ruthless exterior you find a loving, chatty cat, who loves a pat (on his own terms) and a friend to rule the world alongside.’

The RSPCA shared a video of Chester showing off his diverse personalities which range from friendly and playful to temperamental as he swipes and tries to bite staff.

While Chester appears to have found a home with Wilma, at least for now, there are still some 20 older cats in RSPCA SA’s care waiting for loving forever homes.
