PET STERILISATION FUNDING TO HELP WA DOG AND CAT OWNERS

The Cook Government is launching a major cost-of-living relief initiative by providing $500,000 to RSPCA WA to subsidize the sterilization of dogs and cats across Western Australia.

This funding is expected to enable the sterilization of up to 1,200 dogs and 500 cats. A 75 percent discount on sterilization costs will be available at participating veterinary clinics for holders of the WA Seniors Card, Pensioner Concession Card, and Health Care Card.

The subsidy, set to begin in October, requires owners to present a valid concession card, proof of identification, and proof of pet ownership to qualify.

Sterilizing pets offers numerous benefits, including reducing unwanted litters that can lead to animal welfare issues. Sterilized pets are generally happier, calmer, and healthier, which can save pet owners money over time.

This program aims to help pet owners sterilize their dogs and cats ahead of the Cook Government’s new Stop Puppy Farming laws, which will take effect next year. These laws will require pet dogs to be sterilized by the age of two, with exceptions, and the Cat Act mandates sterilization of cats at six months, unless exempt.

Local Government Minister Hannah Beazley stated:

“The Cook Government is dedicated to enhancing the welfare of pet dogs and cats throughout our State. This program provides essential cost-of-living relief for Western Australians who may find the cost of sterilizing their pets a financial burden.

“We saw a positive response to the subsidized sterilization program introduced by the WA Labor Government in 2022, and we’re pleased to double the funding to help even more pet owners.

“This initiative is part of the Cook Government’s ongoing commitment to companion animal welfare, which includes last year’s increase in funding to pet rescue organizations, a $1.2 million boost to the Animal Welfare Grant Program, and a $9.8 million contract for the PetsWA online registration system.”

RSPCA WA Chair Lynne Bradshaw added:

“I commend the State Government for its commitment to animal welfare across the State. The Pet Sterilization Program is an effective way to improve animal welfare in WA.

“This program will support eligible low-income pet owners in meeting current and future sterilization laws while helping to reduce unwanted litters and address other welfare issues related to unsterilized dogs and cats.

“Last year, our shelter took in 269 puppies, a 35 percent increase from the previous year, along with 376 kittens.”
